Early Literacy Makes an Impact

As an initiative of the Foundation for Foster Children’s EDUCATE Program, Power Learners offers services to children from birth through kindergarten to enhance their early language, literacy, and early reading development.  It began in 2017 as a volunteer initiative and was so well received and had such positive outcomes that in August it became a staffed initiative. Program staff are called Early Literacy Coaches.

Here is a snapshot of Early Literacy in 2020:

  • 41 children served
  • 44% of children were behind developmental milestones at the start of services
  • 59% of children were not Kindergarten ready at the start of services
  • 66% of children have made improvements in developmental milestones or K-readiness
  • 59% of children could benefit from more early literacy support

One of our foster children, Makayla, said it best: “I love Tuesdays because I know you will be here.”
